John Bradford and the weight and deliverance of total depravity

Do you know where the popular phrase "There, but for the Grace of God, go I" comes from?

History indicates that it was allegedly said by the pastor John Bradford who, while witnessing men being led to the gallos, uttered,"There but for the grace of God, goes John Bradford."

Why is this utterance significant? Because Bradford realized that when it came down to it, there was nothing different in a spiritual sense between the men sentenced to die and he, but for God's choice to save him from death.
